She was born November 3, 1966, in Glendale, Calif., to John T. and Ina Ruth (Whitlock) Derieg. Amy enjoyed boating and fishing, but her true passion was working with special needs children. She was born in Detroit on September 7, 1917, she was the daughter of the late John Peter and Louise (Martin) Sachs. She graduated from Eastern High School in Detroit. On June 15, 1939 she was united in marriage to Charles Gaiera in Detroit. Carrie worked for many years as a clerk in the Assessors Office of the City of Detroit. In the late 60s she and Charlie retired and moved to the Saginaw Bay shore. She enjoyed playing golf, needlepoint and playing cards, especially euchre and pinochle. She loved swimming and being near the water. She was a member of St. Roch Catholic Church in Caseville. She is survived by her husband of more than 69 years, Charles Gaiera, Pigeon; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Gaiera, Novi; three grandchildren, Kimberly Gaiera, Hartland, Carolyn (Stephen) O'Keefe, Saline and Greg (Heather) Gaiera, California; four great-grandchildren, Sean O'Keefe, Jackson O'Keefe, Samantha Gaiera and Cleo Gaiera and a sister, Delores (Ben) Neely, Massachusetts. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles Gaiera, in July 2001; a sister, Dorothy Kjeldsen and a brother, John Sachs. Ray served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was the owner and operator of the Rainbow Bar in Harbor Beach and later the Harbor Light, from 1953 to 1971. He became owner of Smith Distributing in Bad Axe in 1974 and operated it until his retirement in 1994. Ray was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach, past president of the Michigan License Beverage Association, a member of the Table Toppers, the Knights of Columbus in Sandusky, the American Legion Post 197 of Harbor Beach and the Port Hope Grindstone Sportsman Club. BACKUS PORT SANILAC Sophia M. Backus, age 88, of Port Sanilac, died Tuesday, August 26, 2008 in Sanilac Medical Care, Sandusky. Sophia was born October 23, 1919 in Port Huron to the late Harry and Mary Lou (Turton) Purkiss. She married Stewart Backus on December 10, 1938. They owned and operated Backus Oil Company in Carsonville until her retirement in 1981. She enjoyed traveling, reading, and spending time with her family. Sophia is survived by her daughter, Bonnie (Larry) Erbe of Carsonville; son, Curt (Linda) Backus of Port Sanilac; Five grandchildren, Tricia (Mark) Harriman, Troy (Paula) Erbe, Jennifer (Ted) Glockner, Stephanie (Leah) Backus and Brett (Catherine) Backus; and five great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Thursday, September 4th, in the Pomeroy Funeral Home, Carsonville. The Rev. Jerry Griggs, pastor of the Carsonville U. Methodist Church, will officiate. Hengy 1931 - 2008 Willis Martin "Bill" Hengy, 77, Caseville, passed away Monday, August 25, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw. He was born in Detroit on January 5, 1931 and was the son of the late Willis A. and Melrine (Elles) Hengy. He graduated from Ohio State University and served with the U.S. Air Force in Korea as a Russian translator and also in Japan during the Korean Conflict. On June 25, 1955 he was united in marriage to Joanne E. Russell in Midland. She preceded him in death on April 1, 2004. Bill owned the Hengy Ford dealership in Pigeon for 25 years and was owner of Pigeon Telephone Company. In the mid 1970's he and Joanne started Michigan Directory Company and were extremely involved in the National Yellow Page recycling project before its time. He also served on the National Yellow Page Association board of directors. Along with his son Bill, he started the Caseville Resort and Marina. Bill was a member of the Caseville Village Council and had been chairman of the police and finance committees, was involved with the Caseville Township water agreement negotiations, was a representative on Caseville's city quest project, as well as serving on the tennis court improvement project. Bill loved to golf, had a wonderful sense of humor and wit, was community-oriented and was known as a problem solver. He is survived by a daughter, Susan Hengy, Boca Raton, Fla; a son, Bill Hengy Jr., Caseville; three grandchildren, Shar (Jason) Mohr, Willis K. Hengy and Samantha Stowe; two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Carter Mohr and a sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Frank Stawara of Vero Beach, Florida. Cremation has taken place.
